Post nasal drip is defined as the excessive production of mucus by the sinuses causing the mucus to build up at the back of the nose or dripping at the throat. If the condition is said to be chronic such as a chronic post nasal drip then it means that the post nasal drip condition is recurring frequently. If one is suffering from chronic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis then one is sure to experience post nasal drip many times over a certain period. Aside from rhinitis and sinusitis, other allergies and even gastric problems may also lead to post nasal drip especially if not treated quickly and properly. Hormonal treatment that causes increase in the level of estrogen may also lead to post nasal drip. The best treatment for post nasal drip is to treat the cause and for chronic ones, the best treatment should not only be medications but also to avoid the allergens that trigger the inflammation of ones’ sinuses or the mucus membranes. Thus for someone suffering from rhinitis or sinusitis, it is important to actually identify or pin point the allergens that is causing the attack. Some examples of allergens are pollen, fur or animal hair, dust, stuff toy hair and actually some foods. If for instance, one is allergic to pollen, he should avoid being near to flowers or wear mask if being near one is inevitable; it is the same case for animal hair or fur. It should be noted that post nasal drip, be it chronic or not may lead to bad breath. This is because the bacteria that cause bad breath feed on the protein of the foods that we eat and when one has post nasal drip, excess mucus is being produced. Mucus also has the proteins that bad breath causing bacteria can eat and thus they can multiply easily and eventually cause bad breath.
